Chapter Twelve

“Stop!”

Lexie glanced over her shoulder, half expecting the detective to have drawn his weapon.

At least, she had confirmation.

He had been watching her.

If she didn’t stop, she wouldn’t be able to return to the café. That would be counterproductive because she really needed to speak with the waitresses. But what if he worked for the O’Rourke Detectives and he handed her over to them?

Lexie snorted. If he worked for the O’Rourke Detectives, he would not have asked her to stop. He would have made her stop.

Growling under her breath, she swung around and decided to follow another tactic, one inspired by Luna. “Are you some kind of pervert? Did you follow me to the lady’s restroom?”

That stopped him in his tracks.

He dug inside his pocket, produced his badge and held it out in front of him, almost as if he wanted to use his shield… as a shield.

Lexie narrowed her eyes as if struggling to see what he held up.

“It’s a police badge,” he said.

She trawled around her mind for a typical ‘Luna remark’. “Are you sure? How do I know it’s real?”

“It’s as real as the police issue revolver in my holster.”

Her eyebrows shot up. “Are you threatening me? I’m unarmed.” She put her hands up in the air. “See?” Her fingers itched and she could feel the urge to produce a fireball course along her arm. “I have an itchy nose. I’m going to scratch it.”

He nodded.

As he approached her, he lowered his hand and tucked the badge away inside his pocket.

He moved with such caution, Lexie half expected him to produce handcuffs.

He looked to be in his early thirties, quite fit and healthy. If she tried to flee, she knew he’d have no trouble catching her.

Instead of identifying himself, he launched straight into his interrogation. “I saw you go in and come out of the theater. Mind telling me what you were doing there?”

Sounding affronted, Lexie shot out an accusation, “You are a pervert.”

His eyes dropped to the ground and he huffed out a breath. After a moment of deliberation, he introduced himself. “I’m Detective Dale and I’m investigating a death at the theater.”

Lexie’s mouth gaped open. “A death? Really? Wow. That sounds…” She tried to think of the latest fad word. Definitely not cool or wicket. Sick? She’d obviously been hanging around her chatty feline companion for too long because the only words that came to mind were extraordinary, fascinating, disturbing… She settled for, “Creepy.”

“Actually, let’s start with your name,” he said.

Standing on the threshold with the door half open, Lexie didn’t know if she should step inside again or go outside. She opted for the latter. The moment she took a step, the detective rushed toward her.

“Hey! If you don’t mind, I’d like some space.” Her wings fluttered again. She wondered if she should take that as a sign to actually take flight and escape but then she’d have to swoop down and collect Rebel and her Dachshund.

“Name,” he repeated.

“Gloria Swan.”

He frowned. “You don’t look like a Gloria.
